MONROE, La. (KNOE) - LWF is calling building owners, businesses, and residents to go lights out to help migrating birds travel safely.

According to the LWF, most migrating birds navigate by the moon and stars, but light pollution from big cities and tall buildings can cause disorientation.

“But light pollution does have an effect on how they are able to use the night sky for navigation. And misleading, again it’s misleading them about what is in the sky, where the sky is, it’s a disorientation,” said LWF executive director, Rebecca Triche.

On average, almost 500 million birds migrate through Louisiana and light pollution can cause fatal collisions.

The LWF has given a few simple steps to help save lives:

Turn off unnecessary lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
