Alfonse DiMitri served his country as a private in the US Army from 1951 to 1952, during the Korean War. Born in Goose Creek, Texas, he enlisted in the reserves in 1950 and was sent to basic training in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he showed exceptional skills, did well nn testing and ended up in military intelligence. He was then shipped to Korea.

Private DiMitri witnessed the horrific economic times. In Pusan, he got his wallet stolen by a young boy. “I bargained with the boy through hand signals and negotiated a box of Ritz crackers…he was extremely shrewd for his age but when I gave him those crackers the boy broke down and cried…once the kid cried, I knew I was on a mission,” he said.
