OAKLEY, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) —Dozens of FFA students spent time near Oakley this week, competing in the state FFA and 4-H land and soil evaluation development event.

“Saying you get to play with dirt all day, it’s pretty cool. I will say that. It’s pretty cool,” said Austin Madden, part of the Rigby FFA chapter.

FFA members rotated across five stations designed to help them evaluate soil in a farm field. Students examined variables such as texture and soil type to determine how the land can be used.

“Hopefully they’d like to have an opportunity to work in agriculture,” said Dave Critchfield, the landowner of the event. “This is just a great way to get them started. And eventually, hopefully, most of these kids end up working here in Idaho.”
