Hackers have released Qantas customer data onto the dark web, realising the fears of millions of affected Australians who were first alerted to the significant cybersecurity incident in July.

After a deadline for dozens of global corporations, including Qantas, linked to cloud software giant Salesforce to pay a ransom passed over the weekend, cyber experts have confirmed data from the airline is now exposed.

Qantas says it is investigating dark web channels to confirm what information has been leaked and is working with the federal government and police.

Transport Minister Catherine King described the culprits as "smart … relentless, and they are after our data all of the time".
