NORFOLK, Va. — Significant coastal and tidal flooding in Norfolk and Virginia Beach on Sunday was the result of a nor'easter.

In the Mermaid City, heavy winds and high tides led to moderate to major flooding. While Norfolk city officials say crews were working to mitigate high water levels, some areas are just prone to flooding.

"The typical areas we usually see tidal flooding in a lot of areas near Ocean View and there are issues with tidal flooding near the Hague," said Ricky Matthews with Norfolk Emergency Management Services.

Around noon, water levels were so high near the Hague that you could not see the roadways or parking lot connected to the Chrysler Museum of Art.

Our crews saw a fire hydrant that was almost completely submerged in floodwater.
