UAB has named offensive coordinator Alex Mortensen as its interim head coach for the remainder of the football season following the departure of head coach Trent Dilfer on Sunday.

Athletic director Mark Ingram announced the decision.

On Monday, Ingram introduced Mortensen as “very well liked by our players and staff” and cited the Blazers’ offensive success under his leadership the past two and a half seasons.

Mortensen acknowledged the sudden change, saying he “didn’t expect to be in this position,” but expressed gratitude to Dilfer for bringing him to the program and to Ingram for the opportunity to lead the team.
