The era of carpeted Metro trains ended with the official retirement of railcars dating to the 1980s.

The 2000 series railcars with the iconic brown and orange seats and carpet are out of service forever.

Carpeted railcars bring back memories for riders, but not necessarily good ones.

“Things fall on it, stay on it, whatever,” Metro rider Brasile said. “Who knows when they'll get a chance to clean it."

The carpet would trap a musty smell that occasionally filled a Metro car.

“Yeah, you don't want that,” rider Charlie said.

Those days are over with Metro decommissioning the 2000 series cars and removing them from the Metro system entirely.

"I think it's nice, probably more sanitary," rider Rich said.
