A harrowing new theory in the disappearance of four-year-old Gus Lamont has emerged as police return to the property where he vanished over two weeks ago.

Gus was last seen by his grandmother playing on a mound of dirt outside a homestead about 40km south of Yunta in South Australia on September 27.

His disappearance sparked a major search operation, with teams covering the vast Oak Park Sation property until it was eventually scaled back following no apparent signs of the missing boy.

However, police are returning to the property on Tuesday to continue searching for Gus.
