SUMTER, S.C. (WIS) - A six-year-old was hurt after accidentally shooting themselves in Sumter County, according to authorities.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to Montana Drive on Monday for reports of a shooting victim. Deputies later learned the victim was already being taken to a hospital in a private vehicle.

Officials said deputies later caught up with an EMS vehicle with the victim inside at a gas station on East Liberty Street. A report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office states the child had a gunshot wound to the “lower right facial area.”

The child’s parents were also at the gas station, with the mother reportedly telling deputies that she was in a bedroom while her son was playing nearby. The mother said she heard a loud bang and saw a flash of
