1CANFIELD, OH – An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper was killed Thursday after a semi-truck struck his cruiser while he was assisting a disabled vehicle on Route 11.

Authorities identified the fallen officer as Trooper Nicholas P. Cayton of the Canfield Post.

He died at the scene after being hit south of U.S. Route 224 while performing roadside assistance duties.

Patrol mourns fallen trooper

The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed Trooper Cayton’s death in a statement, calling it a devastating loss for both the agency and the Ohio Department of Public Safety. “Today, the Patrol lost a member of our family,” said Colonel Charles A. Jones, Patrol Superintendent. “Our prayers go out to the Cayton family during this difficult time.”
