JANESVILLE, Wis. (WMTV) - On October 19, 1901, the first cornerstone was laid on the original Janesville City Hall.

Earlier in 1901, the Janesville City Council approved construction of the first City Hall.

On October 19, the Grand Lodge of Masons laid the cornerstone for the 66 by 94 foot structure at the southeast corner of North Jackson and Wall Streets.

The building was made out of sandstone in the Romanesque revival style, according to the City of Janesville.

The building stood three stories tall and also housed the Janesville Police Department, City Jail, Municipal Court, Administrative Offices, City Council Chambers and an Assembly Hall.
