LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The American Cancer Society is observing the 40th anniversary of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Originally started in 1985 as a weeklong campaign to promote screenings and mammograms. Today, the organization says that Breast Cancer Awareness Month has grown into a nationwide movement.
The American Cancer Society states that the breast cancer death rate has fallen by over 40% since 1985.
However, they also report that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime.
Organizations like the Kentucky Cancer Program are working to help educate and provide mammograms to patients in need.
