One man is dead and another is injured following an overnight stabbing, police have confirmed.

Tasmania Police said officers were called to the Morrison Street car park area, at Salamanca, after reports of an altercation between two groups of people.

During the incident, two men reportedly received stab wounds.

Police said a 20-year-old man had died as a result of his injuries, and a 23-year-old man remained in hospital after sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.

A 20-year-old man is in police custody and is assisting officers with enquiries.

"At this stage in the ongoing investigation, it is believed this was an isolated incident, potentially linked to a previous incident which involved a person from each group," police said on Sunday, October 26.
