SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Hurricane Melissa is a powerful Category 5 storm with max sustained wind at 160 miles per hour.

Additional strengthening is possible over the next 12-24 hours before landfall as this storm approaches Jamaica. Landfall is expected on Tuesday morning.

Life-threatening storm surge are expected along the southern coast of Jamaica on Tuesday as well.

In addition to the destructive wind threat, some communities of Jamaica could receive 20-30 inches of rain with isolated areas receiving 40+ inches.

Melissa is also bringing a flooding threat to the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba, where over a foot of rain could fall.
