LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Norton Leatherman Spine is one of nine medical centers in North America that took part in a National Institute of Health study on adult scoliosis. The doctors leading the study found adults who have severe curves in their spine benefit from surgical treatments compared to nonsurgical.

Rene Kurowski can walk around her garden with ease. She's about a year-and-a-half post-surgery for adult symptomatic lumbar scoliosis.

"I had two curves," Kurowski said. "The greater when was 70° and the lesser one was 60°, so I was first diagnosed when I was in adolescent, but at that time I didn’t have any symptoms."

She said symptoms like pain, fatigue and losing her independence led her to Steven Glassman, medical director at Norton Leatherman Spine in Louisville.
