MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTNH) -- When Middletown became the first city in Connecticut to install speed cameras on their roadways, some people called it a money grab -- but four months later, the numbers suggest it has had a significant effect on dangerous driving.

If you are recorded by speed cameras in Middletown while driving more than ten miles per hour over the posted speed limit, the city will send you a fine in the mail. The first offense is $50 and subsequent offenses are $75, both of which come with administrative fees.

Since photo enforcement began in July, more than $1 million in fines have been mailed to drivers. Middletown Mayor Gene Nocera said that the data between August and October shows the number of tickets are way down, especially on Interstate 66.
