PORTLAND, Ore. — As the future of federal SNAP benefits remains uncertain despite recent court rulings , some Oregonians are taking matters into their own hands to ensure families have enough to eat.
In Northeast Portland, one small business turned an annual Halloween celebration on Alberta Street into an effort to provide food for local families concerned about their benefits.
“We purchased enough food, cup of noodles, we have little clementines, we have fruit snacks to hand out, and so, we should be able to, with the donations that we received, to hand out enough for those six to 700 trick-or-treaters that we’ll see," said Sheri Cameron, the owner of Wilde Gild Collective, a hair salon.
