NEWARK - Contingency plans have been solidified to feed the tens of thousands of Newarkers who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) while the food-assistance program is halted and the fate of SNAP funds plays out in federal court.
In packed City Council chambers, Mayor Ras J. Baraka galvanized 70 community-based organizations to respond to the federal government’s freeze of SNAP benefits on Friday, Oct. 31 amid the shutdown that has delayed or limited food-stamp funding and other economic benefits.
Friday’s mobilization of city departments has yielded a temporary emergency assistance website at http://nwkAssist.com.
The site offers vital information, and began accepting applications on Monday, Nov. 3, for food and other urgent resources for Newark’s current SNAP
