A new documentary, Khartoum, sheds light on the terrifying bloodshed and fighting on the streets of the Sudanese capital during the 2023 uprising
Like so many great stories, film director Phil Cox’s documentary about Khartoum starts in a jail cell … his own.
In 2017, after making a film for Channel 4 News, he was thrown in prison for three months in the Sudanese capital - during the rule of dictator President Omar al-Bashir.
Seeing his incarceration as an opportunity, Phil, 50, from Hackney, east London, an experienced hand working in conflict news, started making contacts.
He tells The Mirror : “I made a lot of friends. I met anyone who was anyone, some very kind people, political leaders, artists, wonderful people.”
