A yearslong project aimed at protecting the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club, Inc. from flooding is now complete.
Last August, funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency was granted to address wind damage from Hurricane Ida and help with ongoing flooding problems, the organization's president, Oscar Rainey, said became a major issue. Advertisement
"The building was built in 1920, not long after the organization," Rainey said.
For more than a century, Zulu has stood as a symbol of Black culture, community and carnival tradition, but even an icon needs protection, especially in a city where water is always a threat.
"The Zulu Club, as most of you are aware of, has been on the flood advisory list for quite some time," Rainey said.
