Detroit — The city is expanding its annual cold weather outreach to homeless this year by increasing the number of shelter beds and introducing a program intended to reduce the number families from entering the homelessness system.
The city said Tuesday its annual winter expansion of emergency shelter beds includes 250 more beds than last year, bringing the total to approximately 1,700, including another 50 standby beds for Code Blue weather emergencies. Detroit also is launching its plan that is intended to improve the coordination between the Housing & Revitalization Department, Detroit Police Department and non-profit service providers.
