CHARLESTON — Sue Plaza arrived at the last stop on her delivery route, fresh flower bouquet in tow.
She wasn't driving for Uber Eats or DoorDash; Plaza walked up to Courtney Smith’s door with a nutritious, plant-based meal prepared by the volunteers at Charleston-based nonprofit Amor Healing Kitchen .
All of Amor's dishes are prepared with diligence and love, but this one was extra special. It was the 100,000th meal delivered by the nonprofit, which serves locals facing chronic illnesses.
Smith has been receiving Amor meals throughout the duration of her treatments for stage-three rectal cancer, a diagnosis she received at 31 years old, in the summer of 2023. As she began chemotherapy and pelvic radiation, Smith began to depend on Amor for meals that aligned with her plant-based
