The city of Columbia is accepting public input on a proposed ordinance that would restrict which medians in the city people may stand in.

The median safety ordinance was proposed in October following a Street and Intersection Pedestrian Safety Study, which reviewed local crash data, roadway conditions and nationally accepted safety practices. The study was presented to the Columbia City Council in June.

The study reported that pedestrian and bicycle deaths rose 77% in Missouri between 2013 and 2022. Forty-seven medians in Columbia were identified as unsafe for loitering pedestrians.

The ordinance would set limits on when people may stand or remain in certain medians, and it outlines expectations for crossing high-speed or high-traffic roads.
