Heavy traffic hammered New Jersey’s major crossings Sunday evening, Nov. 30, as holiday travelers returned home in record numbers, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

  • At 7:17 p.m., delays were reported on the George Washington Bridge upper level eastbound at the New Jersey Side Toll Plaza in Fort Lee, officials said. All lanes were open. Travel time was 35 to 40 minutes from I-80 to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge.
  • At 7:10 p.m., delays were reported at the Lincoln Tunnel south tunnel eastbound in Weehawken Township, officials said. All lanes were open. Travel time was 15 to 20 minutes from Turnpike Exit 16E to New York.
  • At 7:02 p.m., delays were reported at the Holland Tunnel eastbound in Jersey City, officials said. All lanes were open. Travel time was 40 to 45 minutes from Turnpike Exit 14C and 35 to 40 minutes from Route 139 at Tonnelle Circle.
  • At 6:59 p.m., delays were reported on the New Jersey Turnpike southbound between Interchange 3 in Deptford Township and Interchange 2 in West Deptford Township, officials said. All lanes were open. Traffic was backed up 4 miles due to volume.

The Port Authority said roughly 8.8 million travelers were expected to use its airports, bridges, and tunnels over the Nov. 24 to Dec. 1 Thanksgiving period, a record for the agency.

An estimated 3.3 million passengers would pass through JFK, Newark Liberty, LaGuardia, and New York Stewart airports, with Sunday, Nov. 30, and Monday, Dec. 1 forecast as the busiest days. Vehicle volume was expected to reach 5.5 million, matching last year.

The agency said all construction at its crossings was suspended for the holiday to manage the surge and urged travelers to allow extra time or use public transit whenever possible.
