Two people were killed, and a 91-year-old man was injured in a house fire in Smithtown on Sunday, Nov. 30, at approximately 3:15 p.m., Suffolk County police said.
Officers and firefighters were called to the blaze at 178 Fifty Acre Road South after 911 callers reported a house on fire, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
One 91-year-old resident was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with smoke inhalation and burns, police said. A man and a woman were found inside the home and pronounced dead at the scene; their names are being withheld until their families are notified, according to the release.
Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad and Arson Section are investigating the cause of the fire, which appears to be non-criminal at this time, authorities said. The St. James Fire Department, assisted by multiple other departments, worked to knock down the flames.
Anyone with information is asked to call Homicide Squad detectives at 631-852-6392.
