SURPRISE, Ariz. — A West Valley man died just hours after celebrating his 23rd birthday with his family.

“It was a good day, but right now, it’s sad, a sad day to remember him," Juan Gutierrez, his father, said. “His friends were waiting for him to celebrate him, too. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a celebration.”

Family identified the man as Kevin Gutierrez. They told 12News he was on his way to a friend's house when he was in a single-car crash off a remote stretch of Sun Valley Parkway in Surprise.

“We thought that he was sitting out there for I don’t know how long and maybe he could have made it if somebody was alerted, but his phone did alert," his sister, Jailene Gutierrez, said.
