Merton Council has signed off a third round of plans for the Mitcham Gasworks redevelopment, increasing the scheme to 626 homes but leaving it without a single affordable unit.
While developers cite viability concerns, critics argue the omission is “unconscionable” given that the project is being promoted as the “largest new housing development in Mitcham for a generation.”
Simon Lewis, Planning and Development Director for developers St William, told the Development and Planning Committee last Thursday that earlier schemes, including one approved in July that promised 35 per cent affordable housing, were no longer deliverable.
He said the decision to remove affordable homes and instead propose a 100 per cent private rented scheme was driven by “viability assessments.”
