Small businesses in a seaside town say their “tight-knit” community is what keeps their beautiful high street alive. St Ives is a seaside town and port in Cornwall, north of Penzance and west of Camborne, on the coast of the Celtic Sea.
It has been a popular tourist destination since the St Ives Bay Line opened in 1877 and has since been named the best seaside town in the UK, as well as one of the most expensive. The town has the second-highest visitor-related spend in the UK, with tourists spending £85 million per year. Around 540,000 day trippers and 220,000 staying tourists visit St Ives every year, with the tourism industry accounting for around 2,800 jobs in the area. And yet, its high street has barely changed in the last 100 years.
