NEW YORK — Federal prosecutors charged an 18-year-old man with setting a fire inside a New York City subway car earlier this week, an attack that left a sleeping passenger critically injured, according to the Department of Justice .

Authorities said Hiram Carrero boarded a northbound train at the 34th Street–Penn Station stop around 3 a.m. Monday, picked up a piece of paper from the car floor, lit it on fire, and ignited the flames near a rider who was asleep. Moments later, as the doors closed, Carrero is accused of jumping off the train.
