A retired soldier was exonerated after a trial this week when his defense attorney was able to show that he was living thousands of miles away on two of the three days he was accused of raping a teenage girl, along with other discrepancies that amounted to reasonable doubt.
“We were lucky to have had a smart jury who were willing to listen to the evidence,” said Mary Beth Harrell, who spoke with the Herald on Friday about the not-guilty verdict that a jury reached on Thursday after 35 minutes of deliberation. “My client was very happy because he and his wife have been going through sheer hell since (the accuser) made that phone call to KPD on Oct. 21, 2020.”
The accuser was 25 years old when she claimed Craig Allen Showman had raped her repeatedly from the ages of 13 to 18.
