Massachusetts has opened a public review of the long-awaited Cape Cod bridge replacements, kicking off an environmental assessment that will help determine the future of the aging Sagamore and Bourne spans.

Gov. Maura Healey has set her sights on replacing the aging Sagamore Bridge by 2027, as they also prepare to later replace the Bourne Bridge. The state received a massive federal funding jolt for the project under President Joe Biden, but Washington’s support has wavered under President Donald Trump.

The state launched a draft environmental impact statement for the project in November — a necessary regulatory step that includes information on how the proposed bridge and road improvements would change how people travel to and from Cape Cod, and how it could affect nearby communities.
