NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk Fire-Rescue crews responded early Sunday morning to a structure fire at the Old Dominion University Welcome Center, located at the corner of Hampton Boulevard and 49th Street.
Firefighters were dispatched at 8:24 a.m., and the first unit arrived at 8:28 a.m. to find smoke showing from the building. According to ODU Police, the fire appeared to have originated in an electrical room.
Crews advanced an initial hose line through the front door for fire attack while additional firefighters conducted a primary search of the structure. Personnel operating on the roof reported flames venting through a skylight, prompting efforts to open the roof and expose the seat of the fire.
