CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The man accused of a violent stabbing on Charlotte's light rail last week made his first court appearance on Monday, and was denied bond.

Oscar Solarzano is charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, carrying a concealed weapon and intoxicated and disruptive in connection with the Dec. 5 attack. The incident happened less than four months after the killing of Iryna Zartuska on the Blue Line.

Solarzano's first appearance was brief. He faced the judge by video using a Spanish translator. The prosecution says Solarzano shouldn't have been on the train at all because he was already banned from the CATS light rail prior to the attack.
