On Tuesday the University of Alaska Fairbanks experienced an outage of heat and hot water and a sprinkler line break, making for an eventful day on campus.
An alert went out just before 8 a.m. to students, faculty and staff of a hot water outage and colder building temperatures because of a mechanical failure with the power plant fans.
Facilities Services turned off building fans bringing outside air in to preserve heat. People were advised to make sure doors and windows were closed to preserve inside temperatures.
The backup boilers kicked in a few hours after the initial outage, Marmian Grimes public information officer for UAF said.
Then around noon a sprinkler line in the Gruening Building burst in two locations on the ground floor, causing flooding on that floor and the two below
