WINOOSKI, Vt. (WCAX) - Police have arrested a former Vermont high school soccer coach accused of sexually abusing a child.
Troopers say Kane Smart, 44, of South Burlington, who was an assistant soccer coach at Winooski High School, was arrested on Wednesday on charges of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child and luring, stemming from allegations dating back to 2021.
Police say they started investigating Smart in January 2025 after allegations of sexual abuse that happened multiple times in 2021, while serving in his role as an assistant soccer coach.
The Winooski School District suspended Smart from having contact with kids when they were notified about the investigation.
The case is being prosecuted in Rutland County due to a potential conflict of interest with the Chittenden Count
