GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KOLN) - A 44-year-old Grand Island man was charged with two felonies after allegedly strangling a 12-year-old boy late Sunday night.

Police say officers were called to a home on West 2nd Street around 11:40 p.m. on a report of a physical disturbance. According to court documents, the suspect, identified as Michael Prunty, struck the boy in the face with an open hand before putting him in a chokehold, restricting his breathing.

Officers noted visible injuries on the child’s face and neck consistent with the reported assault.

Prunty was arrested on suspicion of child abuse (intentional, no serious bodily injury) and assault by strangulation, both felonies.

On Monday, a judge set his bond at 10% of $10,000. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 23.
