ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — The story of a dog found abandoned on the side of the road last week was determined to be made up, according to Attleboro police.

On Sept. 22, officers were called to the Seasons Corner Market around 1 p.m. after two people walked into the store just before 2 a.m. with a small dog in a cage.

The couple told the cashier they had found the dog on the side of the road with a "free" sign and "did not know what to do with it," police said.

A customer ended up taking the dog home with him overnight, but when the store's manager became concerned for its well-being, he reported the incident to the police.
