LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan travelers could see a new east-to-west passenger rail line connecting Holland, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Ann Arbor, and Detroit.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) plans to begin a study in spring 2026 to explore potential routes, including whether the line should run through Howell or Jackson, and how existing tracks could be used.

“It’s just been so helpful, any kind of public transport,” said East Lansing traveler Evan Duvall. He added that a rail line from Grand Rapids to Detroit would be perfect and that it could be a quicker trip instead of dealing with traffic.

Tom Fletcher of the Michigan Association of Railroad Passengers said the route would fill a gap in the state’s network.
