AVONDALE, Ariz. — A student was found in possession of a handgun at a West Valley elementary school on Monday, officials say.
The Avondale Police Department said a 14-year-old boy was arrested after he was allegedly caught with the firearm at Canyon Breeze Elementary School, located near 119th Avenue and Encanto Boulevard. The school teaches students up to 8th grade.
No injuries or threats involving the gun were reported on Monday, police said. The weapon was secured by school staff by the time police officers arrived on campus.
"Our school’s safety procedures enabled us to respond swiftly and effectively, allowing the school day to continue as normal with minimal disruption," the school's principal wrote in a letter to parents on Monday.
