KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- An Independence man is facing multiple criminal charges after investigators say he stabbed a city employee during an attempted robbery over the weekend in Kansas City.

According to Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson, Austin R. Lewis has been charged with first-degree assault, first-degree attempted robbery and two counts of armed criminal action.

Court records say that Kansas City officers were called to an area near Penn Valley Park for a "cutting" call on Sunday.

Witnesses told detectives that Lewis had approached the victim, who had been cleaning up the sidewalks, and asked for a dollar.
