Columbia College is finding a way to help its U.S. military service member students during the ongoing federal government shutdown.

A bridge program known as "You Stand For Us, We Stand By You" is temporarily covering tuition assistance for all affected military students during the funding lapse. A follow-up message from the college noted there currently are more than 2,000 military-affiliated students and it is likely this type of program is a first-of-its-kind for any higher education institution.

"For more than 50 years, Columbia College has been proud to serve those who serve our nation," said Columbia College President David Russell, a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel. "Service members have stood in harm's way for us countless times. When they need us, we must answer the call."
