LOUISVILLE, Ky. — During a news briefing Wednesday afternoon, National Transportation Safety Board member Todd Inman shared more insight into Tuesday's deadly UPS cargo plane crash that killed at least nine people.

The plane, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 manufactured in 1991, was headed to Honolulu and had three people on board.

Inman said the plane was cleared for takeoff from Runway 17R at the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. He said during takeoff roll, a large plume of fire was observed near the left wing. The left engine detached from the wing, and the plane managed to lift off, clearing the airport fence at runway end.

The plane then crashed into structures and terrain off airport property shorlty after. A post-impact fire spread approximately half a mile away.
