MEXICO - The Room at the Inn - Mexico did not open this week due to a lack of available trained volunteers, leaving people in need of shelter with nowhere to go as temperatures remain low.
The shelter has a capacity of sixteen beds and serves as Mexico's only overnight homeless shelter during the winter months.
Audrain County Shelter Resource Coalition Executive Director Ra'vae Moore said staffing shortages have made it difficult to open on nights when the shelter is needed most.
"We wanted to open the shelter when the temperatures were low and with trained volunteers," Moore said. "So we put the call out for several days and were unable to get enough trained volunteers to cover it."
