BROOKINGS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - The Brookings Regional Humane Society has taken in a group of German Shepherds connected to “an ongoing police matter.”

Friday, Dakota News Now reported the SDSU Police Chief was arrested on animal cruelty charges involving German Shepherd dogs. Five dogs were seized from a Brookings residence by authorities.

Due to the size of the dogs, and number of them, the Humane Society has temporarily closed intake for all dog surrenders.

Limited information on the dogs will be made available to the public as the animals are tied to an active law enforcement investigation.

The Humane Society says the animals will not be available for visitation, adoption, or public interaction until they receive full medical clearance.

Other dog adoptions are not affected.
