GOSHEN – The use of the substance Kratom can be deadly, and some five years ago, did in fact, result in local deaths of young people.

With that in mind, Orange County Legislator Janet Sutherland has proposed banning the sale of it to people under the age of 21 and she gained the support of the Human Services Committee on Tuesday.

She said the deaths and the negative side effects are impacting our youth tremendously.

“Kratom is sold in pill form, it can be sold in tablets, it can be sold in liquid, and it is being sold in gas stations. It’s being sold in smoke shops,” she said. “They are really focused on getting our children hooked on this. They are putting it out there in cotton candy, and birthday cake, and fruit flavors, and what not.”
