Two engineering firms studied replacing the deteriorated westbound Washington Bridge for the state during a critical period before the discovery of severe structural damage in the span that triggered its demolition , according to newly uncovered documents.

The bridge replacement idea was ultimately jettisoned in favor of a new round of structural repairs, which uncovered more serious problems and lead to the bridge's emergency closure on Dec. 11, 2023.
