INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (KWWL)— The Independence Community School District elementary schools are currently on secure status due to a police presence nearby. The secure status began Monday afternoon.
No one was allowed to enter or leave the schools or the district office during the secure status, but according to the Independence school district administration office, there was no danger to students. School typically dismisses at 3:15 p.m. It's unclear at this time if schools dismissed on schedule.
The City of Independence Police Department is on scene assisting the U.S. Marshals Service and the Iowa State Patrol in an operation related to a federal warrant.
The impacted perimeter for this operation is from 9th Ave. SW to 7th Ave. SW and from 5th St. SW to 3rd St. SW.
