Sainsbury's shoppers have revolted against a significant overhaul to how Nectar points function, branding the changes 'tedious and unnecessary'.

Customers have been informed they must now use a QR code within the loyalty programme's app to collect and redeem points.

The alteration means shoppers can no longer spend points using the existing barcode system in stores - though they'll still be able to earn them through this method.

The supermarket has encouraged customers to upgrade their app to the most recent version to access the new QR code, which appears on the home screen.

Users will be able to add the QR code to their phone's digital wallet, reports the Mirror .

Those still using a physical Nectar card will be able to earn points as usual, but to redeem them they'll need to swip
