Starting Jan. 1, fees at 14 developed campgrounds, three picnic and day-use areas and two rental cabins in the Monongahela National Forest will increase to help pay for their maintenance and improvements, the forest announced on Friday.
The fee hikes were approved by the West Virginia Recreation Resource Advisory Committee and the Eastern Regional Forster, following a 2024 public comment period. The increases took into account the level of amenities provided, their cost of operation and market assessments of similar facilities, according to the announcement.
The Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act of 2004 allows the Monongahela and other national forests to retain 95% of fees collected at recreation sites and use the funds locally to operate and maintain them.
