YORK, Maine (WMTW) - Maine State Police investigators are working to determine the cause of a crash on the Maine Turnpike that killed a woman from Massachusetts.

State police said troopers responded to the crash at mile 5 on Interstate 95 southbound in York shortly before 3:15 p.m. Monday.

According to police, a 2014 Toyota sedan struck the back of a 2022 Western Star tractor-trailer that was stopped in the breakdown lane due to a mechanical malfunction.

The driver of the car, 81-year-old Janice Goldsmith of Needham, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver of the tractor-trailer had placed reflective warning triangles in the breakdown lane, as required, before the crash occurred.
